NCAdvertiser: Mallozzi Refers Aquarion Open Space Opportunity to Land Trust

First Selectman Rob Mallozzi III reported receiving a letter from Aquarion Water Company notifying the Town of its intent to sell 18+ acres of vacant land for potential development off of Indian Waters Drive, and he said he passed along the information to the New Canaan Land Trust, whose mission includes facilitating the acquisition of properties for open space preservation.

Mallozzi said he did not feel obligated to bring the potential purchase opportunity to the Board of Selectmen. “If it was something viable that affected operations of the town, there could be a different set of obligations,” for him notifying other Town bodies, Mallozzi said.

Land Trust President Chris Schipper told the Advertiser, “The Land Trust is an all volunteer not-for-profit organization that advocates for open spaces, wildlife sanctuaries and the scenic beauty of New Canaan. The Trust can facilitate land preservation via gifts and membership donations, and to-date stewards 380-acres spread throughout our Town.”

“Our Board and membership would welcome the opportunity to work with town officials and neighbors,” Schipper said, “to negotiate with Aquarion in order to preserve all 18.9-acres which surround a healthy aquifer and wildlife sanctuary along the headwaters of the Noroton River.”
